Soviet dancer. He studied at the Bolshoi Ballet School, graduating in 1962. He joined the Bolshoi Ballet and became one of the company's leading soloists, a dancer noted for his daring and roughly hewn bravura. He created major roles in Kasatkina–Vasiliov's Heroic Poem (1964) and Sacre du printemps (1965), in Vasiliev's Icarus, and the title role in Grigorovich's Ivan the Terrible (1975), also appearing in the film of Ivan the Terrible. Gold medal (Varna, 1966; Moscow, 1969). He retired from dancing in the 1990s but has continued to coach for the company.
