Dutch Reformed theologian. He was a member of the Synod of Dort (1618–19). He had been influenced at Leiden by F. Gomar, and from the first he opposed Arminianism and defended an uncompromising Calvinistic predestinarianism. In 1634 he became professor of theology and oriental languages at Utrecht. He did much to promote the rise of Dutch Pietism.
