The identification of a suspect by reference to his voice as heard by a witness or by scientific analysis of a recorded voice by a voice recognition expert. The method of identification has been challenged a number of times but the Court of Appeal has approved the method with the safeguards given to visual identification (e.g. Turnbull direction [1977] QB 224).
