Quick Reference

A manner of viewing a coloured surface through a small aperture so that only a small and isolated area of the surface is visible at one time. Under these conditions the Land effect disappears, and some non-spectral colours such as brown cannot be perceived at all, the appearance of brown arising only when a yellow surface is darker than its surround. See also retinex theory. Compare anorthoscopic, reduction screen.
