Quick Reference

Groups of like‐minded people who work towards a common cause. Organizations may have charitable status, operate without profit, be staffed by unpaid volunteers, or have a governing body which does not receive payment. The number of such organizations in the United Kingdom totals over 250 000 with many whose work is allied to the education sector. These allied voluntary organizations are used extensively by schools as sources of ideas, providers of teaching and learning resources, and givers of advice and guidance. Some organizations offer direct support to pupils and parents on issues relating to the safety of children.
