Is a worker who volunteers to work for an organization without payment, although many volunteers will receive expenses. Typically volunteers work for charitable or voluntary organizations or offer support to public service bodies, such as hospitals or schools. They are motivated by their commitment to the organization for which they work and its values, though in many cases a secondary motivation is a desire to remain active and make social contacts, particularly amongst volunteers who have retired. Volunteers do not have a contract of employment or a contract for personal services and consequently are excluded from most protections afforded by employment law.
