Quick Reference

Is an arrangement operated by an employer through which employees can volunteer to take part in charitable and associated activities (e.g. environmental programmes, charitable fund-raising, or educational and mentoring programmes targeted at disadvantaged youngsters or those with mental health or other problems). A volunteering programme can form part of a wider corporate social responsibility initiative and can serve to transfer management and other skills from the corporate to the voluntary sector. It can also function as a means of providing personal development to employees and serve to promote their engagement: there is evidence that workers who volunteer have lower absenteeism.
