A somewhat quadrilateral-shaped bone forming the posterior and lower portion of the nasal septum. It is one of the unpaired bones of the facial skeleton located in the mid-sagittal plane. It is bounded anteriorly by the ethmoid bone and the septal cartilage, inferiorly by the maxillae and the palatine bones, and superiorly by the sphenoid bone; the posterior border is free, concave, and separates the choanae.
