Dutch humanist theologian. He was a professor at Leiden University and then at the newly founded Athenaeum at Amsterdam. His Historia Pelagiana (1618) and other works were solid contributions to learning. He was among the first to argue that the Apostles' Creed was not the work of the Apostles but of the early Roman Church and he decisively disproved the traditional authorship of the Athanasian Creed.
