In the past Latin Missals have provided Votive Masses for a wide variety of occasions and objects, such as the restoration of peace and in honour of the Lord's Passion. In the 1970 Roman Missal there are fifteen; their purpose is defined as to encourage the piety of the people. The Solemn Votive Masses (‘for a grave cause’) have been replaced by 46 Masses and Prayers for Various Needs and Occasions, while the Ritual Masses (q.v.) provide for particular needs.
