wagon wheel illusion

Quick Reference

A visual illusion caused by aliasing in which a rotating wheel or other object, when viewed in a cinema or television picture or under stroboscopic illumination, appears to turn slowly one way, then slowly the other way as its rotation gathers speed. If the picture or stroboscopic frequency is exactly synchronized to a multiple of the rotation frequency, then the rotating object appears stationary. Compare windmill illusion.
