Austrian member of the Vienna Circle. Waismann is principally remembered for a defence of conventionalism in logic and mathematics, and for introducing the notion of ‘porosity’ or open texture into the philosophy of language. His most important contributions included Einführung in das mathematische Denken (1936, trs. as An Introduction to Mathematical Thinking) and The Principles of Linguistic Philosophy (1965).
