In statistics, a non-parametric and distribution-free test of the randomness of an ordered sequence of binary or dichotomous observations, in which the number of runs expected on the basis of chance is calculated and compared with the observed number of runs. Also called the runs test. [Named after the Romanian-born US statistician Abraham Wald (1902–50) and the Polish-born US statistician Jacob Wolfowitz (1910–81) who developed it in 1940]
