Commander of Muslim army. Conquered Damascus in 635, ending Byzantine rule in Syria and Palestine and leading to Muslim control over Jerusalem. Nicknamed “Sword of God” by Muhammad. Crushed a tribal revolt, known as the Wars of Apostasy, following Muhammad's death, defeating the contemporary self-proclaimed prophet Musaylima, consolidating Muslim control over the entire Arabian peninsula, and preserving the unity and solidarity of the Islamic community.
