Quick Reference

Modern dance work in one act with choreography by Cunningham, music by David Behrman, and design by Jasper Johns. Premiered 10 Mar. 1968 by Merce Cunningham Dance Company at State University, Buffalo, New York, with Cunningham, Brown, B. Lloyd, Neels, Setterfield, Harper, Reid, Solomons, and Slayton. Various elements of the work were conceived as a homage to Marcel Duchamp: Johns's set consisted of seven vinyl boxes with images from Duchamp transcribed onto them, the improvisatory section which divided the two parts of the dance was a reference to Relâche, and the title of Behrman's score (‘…for nearly an hour’) refers to the Duchamp painting titled To Be Looked at with One Eye, Close to, for Almost an Hour.
