British sculptor, born in London. From 1954 to 1958 he was assistant to Barbara Hepworth. He has worked mainly in welded steel, making abstract sculptures in this medium in the 1950s—a period when the bulk of British sculpture was still figurative and in bronze. In early works, sheets of metal tend to be suspended in the air on stalks. The later, larger pieces are placed on the floor like those of Anthony Caro. Wall lives in California and France.
