Austrian dancer and choreographer. She studied at the schools of the Berlin State Opera and Munich State Opera, and in 1923 began studying with Wigman in Dresden. In 1929 she took over the Berlin branch of Wigman's school, and a year later, she and her company, the Tanzer-Kollectiv, performed with Ted Shawn in Munich. She became a leading exponent of expressionist dance and choreographed for many opera productions particularly at the Salzburg Festival. In 1934 she became ballet director of the Vienna State Opera and its school, and during the 1930s also choreographed for Hollywood and La Scala. Between 1938 and 1948 she worked at the Teatro Colón, where she staged productions of Die Josephslegende and Don Juan. After 1949 she worked mainly in Italy and New York, producing opera.
