Maliki jurist and scholar born in Tlemcen (present-day Algeria). Principally known for his compilation of North African and Andalusian legal opinions (fatwas) in his multivolume Al-miyar al-murib. By the sixteenth century his Al-miyar had become an integral part of the educational curriculum in North Africa; today it is studied as a source of information on the social, cultural, economic, and juridical practices of medieval al-Andalus and the Maghreb. In addition to Al-miyar, another fourteen of his known works are extant; almost all concern Islamic jurisprudence.
