is remembered for his account of an eastern tour, The Crescent and the Cross: or Romance and Realities of Eastern Travel (1845), a highly successful work which covered much the same ground as his friend Kinglake's Eothen. He also wrote two historical novels, Reginald Hastings (1850) and Darien (1852).
