British dancer, choreographer, and director. He studied at the Sadler's Wells School before joining National Ballet of Uruguay in 1954, and subsequently dancing with Covent Garden Opera Ballet (1958–60), Stuttgart Ballet (1960–2), and Frankfurt Ballet (1962–4). In 1968 he was appointed director of the National Ballet of Iran (until 1970) and in 1971 formed the Mahalli folk dance troupe, choreographing the full-length ballet Simorgh (mus. Tjeknavorian, 1975). He was then artistic director of Northern Ballet Theatre (1976–87), for which he choreographed several ballets, including Romeo and Juliet…Tragic Memories (mus. Tchaikovsky, 1978), Cinderella (mus. J. Strauss, 1979), and A Midsummer Night's Dream (mus. Mendelssohn, arr. Salzedo, 1981). He was artistic director of La Scala (until 1992) and between 1994 and 2007 was artistic director of Sarasota Ballet, creating many works including Eva Peron: A Dance Portrait (1997) and a new staging of Swan Lake (1999).
