Quick Reference

The appointment of a Secretary at War upon the Restoration in 1660 led to the keeping of more systematic records. These are now kept in The National Archives in WO. The returns of accommodation for men and horses at inns and alehouses in 1686 (WO 30) provide statistical information about such provision for each settlement in England and Wales.
