The legatee of religious knowledge and esoteric truths in Shiism. According to Shii belief, Muhammad designated his cousin and son-in-law, Ali ibn Abi Talib (d. 661), as his legatee and successor. The knowledge given to Ali as wasi and imam was then passed on to the latter's successors through formal designation (nass).
