(1) Something that is assigned or appointed. The principal meaning refers to the apportioning of sections of the Quran for orderly recitation. The simplest mode of division arranges the reading into seven sections, so that the entire scripture can be recited in one week. An alternative recitation divides the Quran into thirty parts so that it can be read in one month. (2) In the system of waqf, denotes a portion of the financial provision to be assigned to maintenance of religious functionaries. (3) In the language of Islamic taxation, a major source of public revenue based on the potential of a piece of land for production, whether or not it was actually cultivated.
