The use of the Web to broadcast a video or media file over the Internet using streaming media technology. Webcasts can be distributed to many simultaneous viewers either live or on demand. Much webcasting is done by existing broadcasters who simultaneously broadcast their content over the web. The BBC is an excellent of example of this, both with its website and its iPlayer application. Webcasting is also used by companies and organizations to communicate with staff, audiences, students, and investors and is usually done at a much lower cost than in person meetings. Webcasting differs from traditional broadcasting in that it can be interactive with its online audiences.
