Ballet in one act with choreography by Ashton, libretto, music, and design by Lord Berners. Premiered 27 Apr. 1937 by Vic-Wells Ballet at Sadler's Wells Theatre, London, with Honer, Helpmann, de Valois, and Fonteyn. This comic ballet is based on and accompanied by text from Gertrude Stein's play They Must be Wedded To Their Wife. It is set at a French provincial wedding and portrays the various eccentricities of the guests, who include several of the groom's former mistresses. Stein's text was originally sung by a chorus but subsequently it has been spoken by a narrator seated at a table on the stage. The ballet has been revived by Royal Ballet Touring Company (1974) and Joffrey Ballet (1979).
