English composer. With Wilbye, he was the most important of the English madrigalists who followed the lead given by Morley in 1593 and 1594. He published several volumes of madrigals and contributed one of the finest madrigals to The Triumphes of Oriana in 1601. Weelkes is one of the composers whose imagination is most evidently fired by the bold and vivid imagery of the age of Donne.
