(fl ?Lower Rhine, c. 1450–60). German engraver. He is named after his main work, the large-format engraving of the Weibermacht (‘Power of Women’; see Lehrs, 1908, no. 16). From another engraving, bearing the handwritten date 1462, he was also given the name Master of 1462, and he is attributed with a further group of engravings, depicting religious and secular subjects, closely related to each other in their somewhat coarse draughtsmanship and their engraving technique. They are usually assigned to various hands—the master with the Banderoles, the master of the Playing cards and his followers, the master of the Gardens of love and the master of Balaam. Many of these engravings are copies from earlier patterns and may have originated from the Lower Rhine.
