US astronaut. He was the pilot of Skylab 2 that was launched as the first crewed mission of the spacecraft in June 1973. In April 1983, he flew as commander of the first Challenger space shuttle mission. Weitz was selected as an astronaut in 1966, and retired in 1988 to become deputy director of the Johnson Space Center. He retired from NASA in 1994.
