Victoria Welby was born on 27 April 1837 and died on 29 March 1912. She was the daughter of the Honourable Charles and Lady Emmeline Stuart-Wortley. Princess Victoria, for whom she was named, stood as her godmother. Five days after the ceremony, Princess Victoria became Queen of England. Victoria Welby received no formal education. From the age of eleven until she was orphaned at the age of eighteen, Victoria accompanied her mother on her extensive travels. She often remarked that her travels with her mother constituted her only formal education.
