The industrial process of joining two metals together by heating the juxtaposed surfaces to above their melting points in order to mix and fuse them. Methods of welding expose welders to several health risks. Oxyacetylene welding uses the hot flame of acetylene gas, which generates toxic fumes. Arc welding uses direct electric current, and the white-hot metals radiate ultraviolet radiation, which can cause retinal burns and blindness.
