Quick Reference

Welshcakes are small round cakes made from a shortbread-like dough sweetened with currants and spiced up with ginger, nutmeg, and the like. They are traditionally baked on a griddle or bakestone, which gives them a biscuity texture, but they can also be cooked in the oven, which makes them more cake-like. As their name suggests, they are a Welsh speciality (‘Mother has made Welshcakes,’ letter from Dylan Thomas, 1932), and in Welsh they are called pice ar y maen, ‘cakes on the stone’.
