James Wellwood was born in Touch, Scotland and died in London on 2 April 1727. He was educated at Glasgow University and the University of Leiden, Holland, where he seems to have gained an MD. He was a friend of Thomas Burnet. Wellwood returned to England with William of Orange and became physician to William and Mary in December 1690. He was elected a Fellow of the College of Physicians of London in 1691 and Censor of the College in 1722.
