son of a lawyer, became at Eton a close friend of T. Gray and Horace Walpole. Gray wrote a moving sonnet on his early death, ‘In vain to me the smileing Mornings shine’, first printed in 1775, which Wordsworth used to illustrate his views on poetic diction in the Preface of 1800 to the Lyrical Ballads.
