(1846–98), after a successful career as a banker in Syracuse, N.Y., wrote the posthumously published David Harum, A Story of American Life (1898), a popular novel built around the character of a shrewd, humorous country banker in upstate New York. A short story was posthumously published with his letters in The Teller (1901).
