Ballet in one act with choreography by Balanchine, music by H. Kay, set by John Boyt, and costumes by Karinska (although danced in practice clothes at its premiere). Premiered 7 Sept. 1954 by New York City Ballet at City Center, New York, with D. Adams, Bliss, Reed, Magallanes, P. Wilde, LeClercq, and d'Amboise. It evokes the atmosphere and dance vernacular of the American West within the frame of classical ballet. It is now in the repertory of many companies, including Houston Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Miami City Ballet, Colorado Ballet, and Birmingham Royal Ballet.
