Anglican Bp. of Zanzibar from 1908. Joining the UMCA in 1898, he learned to live among Africans and to understand their point of view. He took the lead in opposing the proposals of the Kikuyu Conference of 1913. In 1920 he largely inspired the appeal for Christian Unity put out by the Lambeth Conference.
