Quick Reference

An index developed by the US armed forces and used by athletes as an indicator of the relative severity of environmental temperatures. It is computed using the following equation: WBGT index = 0.7(WBT) + 0.2(GT) + 0.1(DBT), where WBT is the wet bulb temperature (recorded from a thermometer with the bulb surrounded by gauze, moistened with distilled water, and ventilated by a fan or a whirling device), GT is the temperature recorded from a thermometer enclosed in a black or grey metal sphere and exposed to the full intensity of sunlight encountered by the athlete, and DBT is the dry bulb temperature recorded on a normal thermometer not exposed to direct sunlight. The temperature is measured in degrees Fahrenheit. The index takes no account of the wind chill factor.
