Quick Reference

Probably the first grain crop to be cultivated when the concept of agriculture was invented about 10,000 BCE, perhaps by observant women in Mesopotamia, the fertile region in what is now Iraq. The discovery that grains of wheat could be crushed to yield flour and that this could be cooked to produce bread led to the transformation of hunter-gatherers into agriculturalists and made human settlements possible, thus leading to the birth of civilization.
