He is best known for his work on the theory of indexing, culminating in How to Make an Index (1902), and then for his edition of Pepys’s diary (1893–9). His prodigious output also included works on librarianship and editions of 16th-century plays. Wheatley was the Early English Text Society’s first secretary.
