author of miscellaneous verse, especially elegies, and prose tales, is principally remembered for his Promos and Cassandra (1578), a play in rhymed verse (based on a tale in Cinthio's Hecatommithi), which provided the plot for Shakespeare's Measure for Measure and is an early example of English romantic comedy.
