A nematode worm, Trichuris trichiura, the most common nematode worm infection in the world, spread from person to person by the fecal-oral route, sometimes by fecal-feeding flies. It is common in communities with poor sanitation and poorly maintained summer camps, and it is almost universal in some low-income nations with poor sanitation.
