(1859–1933), born Cape Town, South Africa, was successively bishop of Carpentaria and of Willochra and wrote numerous theological works as well as the descriptive accounts Round about the Torres Straits (1917) and Thirty Years in Tropical Australia (1918). He also published six volumes of verse, Melchior and Other Verses (1893), Night (1897), The World's Tragedy (1910), Australia (1913), The Poems of Gilbert White (1919), The Later Poems of Gilbert White (1930) and Selected Poems of Gilbert White (1932). A biography by, White of Carpentaria, was published in 1949.
