West Indian bass‐baritone. Won schol. to Juilliard Sch. 1968 and took part in Callas masterclasses. Début Washington DC 1974 (Trulove in The Rake's Progress). Débuts: NY City Opera 1974; Eur. (Cardiff, WNO) 1974; ENO 1976; Glyndebourne 1978; CG 1978; Salzburg Fest. 1990. Sang Porgy in Gershwin's opera at Glyndebourne 1986, and Wotan in Scottish Opera's Das Rheingold (1989) and Die Walküre (1991). Concert career incl. bass parts in Elgar's Dream of Gerontius and Shostakovich's 13th Sym. CBE 1995. Knighted 2004.
