Ballet in eight acts with choreography and libretto by Hu Rongrong,Fu Aidi, Cheng Laihui, and Lin Yangyang, music by Yan Dinxian, and design by Du Shixiang and Zhu Shichang. Premiered May 1965 at Shanghai School of Dancing with Cai Kuoying, Long Guiming, and Ga Xiamei. It is based on a 1945 Chinese opera which tells the story of a young girl who suffers at the hands of her oppressive landlord until rescued by the Red Army. Originally only half an hour long it was later extended to its full eight acts, and the title role became so strenuous it had to be performed by several ballerinas during the course of one performance. It was filmed by Shanghai Film Studio in 1972.
