[W. Whitehead (1840–1913), English surgeon] n. A liquid containing iodoform, benzoin, storax, balsam of tolu, and solvent ether. It may be applied to ribbon gauze and used as a dressing in the treatment of inflammatory conditions such as alveolitis (dry socket) and as a post-operative dressing after maxillectomy. Iodoform has marked anaesthetic properties when applied to mucous membranes.
