Quick Reference

One of the two major recensions of the Yajur Veda. The adjective ‘White’ or ‘Pure’ distinguishes it from the other recension, the Black Yajur Veda (Kṛṣṇa Yajur Veda), as does the fact that its mantras or yajus are not mixed with explanatory prose formulae (brāhmaṇas). (These are collected separately in its Brāhmaṇa, the Śatapatha.) The White Yajur Veda is divided between two collections (saṃhitās), each preserved by its own school (śākhā): the Vājasaneyī Mādhyaṃdina Saṃhitā and the Vājasaneyī Kāṇva Saṃhitā.
