Quick Reference

Whortleberry is an alternative name for the bilberry, a small purplish-blue berry that grows on a bush of the heath family. It originated in southwest England as a variant of the now obsolete hurtleberry, itself a descendant of horte, ‘bilberry’, a word of unknown origin. The American term huckleberry is probably an alteration of whortleberry.
