(1909–2001) Shortly after graduating from Vassar College in 1931, Elizabeth Wickenden, also known as “Wicky,” began an exemplary career as social welfare administrator, advisor to public and nonprofit organizations, policy writer, and advocate, continuing until shortly before her death in 2001. One of those rare individuals whose vision and commitment gave shape to contemporary social welfare institutions, her expertise spanned child welfare, social security, health, public assistance, unemployment, and legal services policies and programs.
