Quick Reference

A cross-hatched pattern appearing on the surface of octahedrite iron meteorites which have been polished and etched with acid. It was discovered in 1804 by the Austrian mineralogist Aloys Joseph (Beck Edler) von Widmanstätten (1754–1849). It results from an intergrowth of the minerals kamacite and taenite as the meteorite parent body cooled in space.
