(1861–1928)

A German physicist, and founder of the Geophysical Institute at Göttingen (1901), Wiechert made important improvements to the seismograph, which made it possible to distinguish between different types of seismic waves. He was thus able to identify and name P- and S-waves. He also calculated the diameter and density of the Earth's core from seismic data.
